PREVENTIVE CARE FOR OUR SENIOR PETS

At around age 7, pets begin to enter their senior years. They can develop diseases similar to humans, such as diabetes, heart disease, endocrine disease, liver diseases, kidney disease, arthritis, and cancer. Sometimes, early stages of these diseases go unnoticed. Just as in human medicine, preventive health care for seniors can result in early detection and treatment before disease puts your pet’s health at risk.

Here are some tips to help keep your older pet healthy and happy:

Schedule routine check-ups. We recommend semi-annual health checks for seniors. We can identify health risks through simple tests, including:

  • Routine blood testing
  • Urinalysis
  • Electrocardiograph
  • Radiographs
  • Blood pressure

Let us know about any changes in your pet you’ve observed, such as:
  • Weight
  • Eating or drinking
  • Behavior
  • Activity level
  • Skin and coat
  • Sleep
  • Housetraining
  • Tremors or shaking
Ask us about how nutrition and exercise can play a vital role in keeping your older pet healthy.

During the month of October, if you have a senior dog or cat, we would love to hear your story! Send us a picture of your senior, along with his or her information (name, age, sex and type of dog or cat) and your information. Our staff will be reviewing your stories and picking the top three stories for both dogs and cats. Winners will have their stories and pictures of their animals displayed on our web site and at our hospital during November. Help us celebrate your senior pet!
